Treating Eczema with Natural Skin Care

Today I would like to discuss a skin condition that is suffered by as many as 10% of children and 3% of adults in the United States: Eczema.

Eczema causes ones skin to become highly irritated and inflamed. Symptoms include itchiness, thick or scaly patches, and rashes. While there is no definitive cause, most experts believe that it is triggered by the immune system's response to a certain trigger.

*Avoid scented soaps, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, etc.
*Be vigilant about the ingredients in skin care products.
*Foods may trigger eczema.  These foods are cow's milk, peanuts, shellfish, eggs, soy, tomatoes, lemons, strawberries, corn, wheat, and common preservatives found in foods.
*Allergens such as pollen, mold, dust mites, and pet dander may also trigger the condition.
*Synthetic fabrics may also trigger this condition.  Wool is another trigger. Stick to soft, natural fibers.

Other specific ingredients found in many skin care products are known triggers.  These are:

Phenoxyethanol
Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Methylisothiazolinone
Fragrances
Formaldehyde releasers, including:
Formaldehyde
Quaternium-15
Bronopol
Diazolidinyl urea
Imidazolidinyl urea
DMDM Hydantoin

What can one do to treat Eczema?

Many people recommend petroleum jelly.  I wholeheartedly disagree.  This is derived from crude oil and when you use it, you are exposed to contaminants from the petrochemical industry. Petroleum jelly or mineral oil serve no benefit to the skin.

You will want something natural and very simple.  Look for rich, natural butters and oils.

Amal Oils Organic Argan Oil is one very safe option for the face.

Suki Organic Butter Healing Salve is ideal for rough body skin and will help soothe the itching and uneven texture brought on by eczema.

I cannot think of a better body cleaner than Pangea Organics Tunisian Olive Oil and Coconut Bar Soap. Formulated in small batches right in Colorado, this soap is ultra nourishing and free of harmful artificial fragrance. It is as pure and natural as can be.

Using natural skin care is best when it comes to treating Eczema.  At Nature's Basin, we have a vast selection of products designed to help you with your skin's specific needs.

  1. Chemicals and substances in your environment can affect your skin. Use a mild washing powder, wear natural materials next to your skin and don't let your skin come into contact with household chemicals.
